Administrative/Biographical History

The National Alliance of Women’s Organisations (NAWO) was founded 1989 with a vision of creating a world where all women and girls were able to participate in and influence the decisions that impact on their lives. NAWO was an umbrella organisation, counting over 100 organisations and individuals in England among its membership. Membership was diverse with single issue and specialist organisations, faith groups, health centres, arts-based organisations, services and campaign groups all represented. Working with its membership, NAWO’s mission was to promote the human rights of all women and girls, striving to make equality between women and men a reality throughout the UK, Europe and worldwide. The two cornerstones of NAWO’s work were the Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action.
