Administrative/Biographical History: 

Mike Arlen was one of the most prolific male physique photographers of the 20th century. Born Michael McGrath, he originally worked in London as a journalist, and fashion and music photographer before he moved into photographing men in the late 1970s. While he produced work for multiple pornographic magazines; his self-funded, self-designed and self-published magazine entitled "Mike Arlen’s Guys" became a top-shelf staple. Mike Arlen produced an expansive body of work, spanning several decades, and many consider him to be a pioneer of gay male photography.  

Scope and Content: 

The Mike Arlen collection consists of pornography focused photographs, contact sheets and negatives taken by Mike Arlen. The collection also includes correspondence, ephemera and sales catalogues of 'special' contact sheets of models who appeared in volumes of the magazines “Mike Arlen’s Guys”, "Zipper" and “Manpower”.
