Republic

Protest and Campaigning

About this Archive

Administrative/biographical history

'Republic' was formed in London in 1983 as an interest and pressure group to promote Republicanism, to provide a forum and focus for democratic republican opinion and to contribute to ideas about the concept of a British Republic. It was affiliated to the Thomas Paine Society; to the Campaign for the Freedom of Information and to Charter 88.

The group subscribed to the Quarterly Review of the Constitutional Reform Centre. It hosted its own Working Party on Constitutional Reform, although avoided direct affiliation with any political party.
