Administrative/Biographical History
Creation Book Publishing was an English publishing house founded in 1989 as an offshoot of Creation Records. It evolved and expanded throughout the 1990s with various sub-imprints and global distribution, and was active well into the 21st century.
They published books ranging from new fiction to classic poetry and art, from film studies to history and documents of the counter-culture. Creation was also heavily involved in translating foreign language works and publishing them for English readers, and worked closely with the French Cultural Institute to produce first-time translations of books by such authors as Antonin Artaud and Pierre Guyotat.
Creation also published many books on Japanese culture, including a series featuring ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period, but also dealing with modern-day Tokyo and its various sub-cultures. In total they published well over 500 books, and will perhaps be remembered as one of the most ambitious English independent publishers of the late 20th century.
