Recentring the Afro-Latin Roots of Salsa
Cross Body is a popular style of Salsa in London, but it’s less common in Latin America. As a growing community of queer instructors, the previous training we've had available to us has largely been Cross Body. While Cross Body forms the foundation of our progressive courses, we're committed to honouring and re-centering Salsa’s Afro-Latin roots by:
Developing a curriculum that integrates the Afro-Latin history of the music, dance and culture
Including moves and approaches from various Salsa styles and emphasising adaptability in dancing rather than focusing on a single style
Inviting Afro-Latin practitioners as guest teachers on our courses
Offering specialised workshops and courses led by Afro-Latin practitioners
Supporting dancers with experience in other Salsa and Afro-Latin dances to explore Cross Body, while valuing the different knowledge they might bring
Prioritising Care and Connection
We’re rethinking what progression means in our courses and teacher training. Instead of emphasising complicated moves and techniques, we prioritise connecting with the music, dancing safely and consensually, and building connections with your dance partners.

Practical information
If you have any accessibility needs or concerns please email us at enquiries@bishopsgate.org.uk.
LGBTQIA+ individuals often face exclusion and oppression in traditional partner dance communities. We seek to provide a safe and affirming environment where everyone can enjoy Afro-Latin partner dancing, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our mission is to foster connection, celebrate diversity, and empower the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities. We achieve this by creating safe spaces for queer people to learn and dance, developing an inclusive pedagogy to train dancers and teachers, and hosting events that centre queer Latin American culture and voices
Proudly independent since 1895, Bishopsgate Institute is a cultural venue in the City of London. Our beautiful Victorian building is a place for people to connect over a shared love of learning. We believe everyone’s history should be valued, and our special collections and archives document the experiences of everyday life, as well as the people who have campaigned for social, political and cultural change. Come on in to explore our archives, take a course, or hire our amazing spaces.
