Ben Comeau
Ben Comeau is a multi-genre composer, pianist and organist. He graduated with a starred first in music from Cambridge University, before studyingpostgraduate jazz piano at Guildhall, London, and in Cologne.
His compositions and arrangements have been heard in venues including the Royal Albert Hall, the Wigmore Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall. He has composed and performed several times for BBC Radio 3, and has been featured on their ‘In Tune’ programme. Aged 18 he won the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition. As a solo recitalist on piano and organ, he is particularly known for his innovative and eclectic programming, including five centuries of the classical canon alongside arrangements of music from Michel Legrand to Astor Piazzolla to Bjork. He has improvised soundtracks to numerous silent films, and his recitals regularly include spontaneous improvisations on audience requests. He has been a teacher and examiner at Cambridge and Middlesex universities.
In the last couple of years he has increasingly questioned the roles music can play in society, for good or ill. Much of his recent work explores the possible ways that music might contribute towards environmental and social justice, an ongoing learning process which frequently exposes questionable assumptions within conservatoires and classical music institutions.
