Learn

Bishopsgate Institute is so much more than a venue that runs courses. We are a lively community of learners. Our passion for knowledge is written into our history and runs through the fabric of our building.

Though our building may currently be closed, our motto is “I never stop learning” and you can continue to develop your skills with us. As part of our spring term, we’ve launched a selection of online courses. Browse these courses in our What's On section.

Languages

Do you want to learn a new language, or take one you already know to the next level?

History & Society

Our programme includes a diverse collection of walking tours through the city, and examinations of the past and present of the city and its people.

Wellbeing & Fitness

If you’re looking to take better care of your mind as well as your body, our Wellbeing & Fitness courses are for you.

Explore...

We welcome the curious, the beginner, the expert, and the academic. We schedule a broad range of courses for mind, body and life.

You can learn a language or how to tango, explore creative writing and photography, drop in for yoga, or sing with our choir.

Our promise to you

Our programme offers students a high-quality learning experience at a reasonable price, delivered by skilled, knowledgeable tutors. Our Wellbeing and Fitness courses help you build your physical and mental resilience – but the Institute is nothing like a gym. We offer Performing Arts classes designed for beginners, but led by professional performers. A number of our courses give students the chance to explore our Special Collections and Archives, and interact with a wealth of material that is simply not available elsewhere. In general, and on our Languages courses in particular, our students learn in small classes, allowing genuine interaction between students and tutors.

Access

Due to the nature of our historic building, some of our teaching spaces are only accessible via stairs. We always endeavour to make all reasonable adjustments, so everyone can attend and enjoy our courses and events. If you have particular requirements, email enquiries@bishopsgate.org.uk

We take care of our learners.

#FROMTHE ARCHIVES

Married in 1950, Chris and Betty Birch have been involved in political, trade union, and LGBTQ+ activism for over 60 years. Sharing similar interests, they were both Communist Party Members and involved with organisations such as the Aid to Spanish Youth Committee. After the death of his friend, Mark Ashton, Chris became involved in forming the Mark Ashton Memorial Trust, which was created to raise money for individuals living with HIV. The archive includes the truncheon taken from the police by Mark Ashton, correspondence, personal scrapbooks, press cuttings, and various other papers relating to the couples activism.
