The London Hospital: a children's ward

1900 photograph of a children's ward in The London Hospital

The London Hospital was renowned for its pioneering treatments and dedicated staff. Children as young as 6 were admitted with alcoholism, whilst others succumbed to diseases caused by the poor hygiene and malnutrition rife in the East End. In 1907,
a single night saw 14 children die from gastroenteritis, a disease which is easily treatable today.
