50 Years of the Gay Liberation Front
A national train strike will be taking place on this day, though this course shall still take place. London Underground should not be affected by these strikes.
Inspired by the Stonewall uprisings in the US, the GLF demanded 'Absolute Freedom For All' worldwide. For them, complete LGBTQ+ liberation meant housing rights, universal healthcare, economic freedom and so much more. Yet, half a century on, the fight is far from over, injustice is rife and LGBTQ+ inequality remains.
Dan Glass, author of United Queerdom: From the Legends of the Gay Liberation Front to the Queers of Tomorrow, will lead you through over five decades of LGBTQ+ culture and protest. You will discover the centrality of protest to queer history and identity, and learn about the back-breaking hard work, as well as the glamorous and raucous stories, of those who rebelled against injustice and fought for queer liberation.
Who is this course for?
Anyone with interest in revolutionary history, creative activism, joyful mischief, LGBTQ+ power.
Will I need any equipment or materials?
Please bring a pen and paper for taking notes.
Practical information
This course will be taught through a combination of tutor presentations and group discussions.

Meet the Tutor
Dan Glass
Dan Glass is an ‘Aids Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) healthcare and human rights activist, performer, presenter and writer.
Dan has been recognised as Attitude Magazine’s 'campaigning role models for LGBTQI youth', a Guardian ‘UK youth climate leader’, 2017 'Activist of the Year' with the 'Sexual Freedom Awards' and was announced a 'BBC Greater Londoner' in 2019 for founding 'Queer Tours of London - A Mince Through Time. Dan is an artist with the global In Place of War artist network and an educator from the ‘Training for Transformation’ movement.
Dan recently presented ‘Never Again - Fighting the Polish far-right’ and the Coronavirus cabaret: the online show combating social isolation’ and his book United Queerdom: From the Legends of the Gay Liberation Front to the Queers of Tomorrow was recognised as Observer book of the week June 2020. Dan is also one of the founders of self-defence empowerment programme Bender Defenders and Queer Night Pride aimed at confronting rising hate crime.
