
Writing Short Stories - The Next Step
This course will take place online, for a reduced rate of Full £89 / Conc. £67
This practical workshop will help you better express your unique voice by exploring different ways to approach style and structure. We will discuss published texts and share work with each other in a supportive environment.
Who is this course for?
This course is for students who are already writing short stories.
Do I need any previous skills or knowledge?
You will need to have previously participated in our Writing Short Stories course and/or have been presently engaged in writing short stories. You will need to be a regular reader of short stories. You will be fluent in reading and writing in English, with a minimum of Level 2 literacy. You will have the ability to write and read texts outside of class, and in class, you will have a willingness to share your work.
Will I need any equipment or materials?
This course will be held via Zoom. You need a computer/laptop or mobile phone to access the Zoom website, and a reliable internet connection. For further information on how to join a Zoom meeting, you can watch the joining video here.
You will need a notebook, pen or pencil, or digital equivalent, and a folder to store course materials.
Will I be assessed?
There is no formal assessment for courses at Bishopsgate Institute. However, to monitor your learning and progress, tutors will assess your participation in classroom activities.

- Employ a variety of strategies to generate ideas for writing short stories
- Participate fully in a workshop environment
- Feedback on each other’s work with focus and sensitivity
- Continue to explore point of view, voice, syntax and balance in writing short stories
- Read and discuss a range of published stories
- Begin to evaluate how and why stories work – your own and published work
- Feel more confident in your own writing voice
- Revise your work to make it stronger.
Meet the Tutor
Barbara Marsh
Barbara Marsh is a London-based American writer, musician and teacher. Winner of the 2015 Troubadour International Poetry Prize, her collections, To the Boneyard and Mr Ferndean Takes Stock are published by Eyewear.
Her poetry has been widely anthologised and has appeared internationally in various literary magazines. As a musician/singer/songwriter, she was half of the Anglo-American duo The Dear Janes (Geffen Records).
She has an MPhil in Creative Writing from the University of Glamorgan and is currently working on a collection incorporating short fiction, poetry, and memoir.
