Students also explore protest art within a wider international context, touching on the Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter movements. An afternoon making session allows everyone to create a visual message relating to a political or social issue of their own choosing, using techniques common to resistance art.

How will this course be taught?
These exploratory archive courses are taught through the handling, examining and reading of curated sets of original historical materials from our library and special collections. There will be opportunities to share findings through informal, facilitated discussions. A short tutor presentation provides background and context.
Meet the Tutors
Dr Michelle Johansen
Dr Michelle Johansen is a social historian of nineteenth and twentieth-century London based at Bishopsgate Institute. Michelle has extensive experience of delivering engaging archive learning sessions for a range of audiences, from primary school pupils to university students to adult learners. She has a particular interest in ‘hidden histories’ and enjoys bringing forgotten or neglected metropolitan individuals and incidents back to life. Michelle’s publications include articles in Teaching History and the London Journal.
Daryl Elaine Stenvoll-Wells
Daryl Elaine Stenvoll-Wells is an artist, educator and community arts organiser with a career spanning over 20 years. She started off as a muralist in Los Angeles, and built her philosophy of inclusive arts practice in economically and culturally underserved areas in Washington, D.C. and New York City. Daryl founded Art Responders in 2014. Beginning with the first exhibition, VIRAL: 25 Years from Rodney King (2016), she has conceived and curated programming for Art Responders internationally, including the event series ANTIVIRAL (2017) and the exhibition COLORISM: The Spectrum of Internalised Bias (2019).
