The aim of this absolute beginners course is to introduce you to the basics of Spanish. The course covers the four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing). It is taught through tutor-led activities, pair and group work, role-playing, and independent research as part of homework.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners.
Will I need any equipment or materials?
This course will be held via Zoom. You need a computer/laptop or mobile phone to access the Zoom website, and a reliable internet connection. For further information on how to join a Zoom meeting, you can watch the joining video here.
You may be asked to purchase a textbook: Nuevo Ele Actual A1 Libro del Alumno by Virgilio Borobio (ISBN 9788413180373). This will be confirmed in the first session.
Are there any follow-on courses I can take?
Where possible, we will always aim to offer students the opportunity to progress in their learning. The next level after this course is Spanish Level 1: Module B.
Will I be assessed?
There is no formal assessment for courses at Bishopsgate Institute. However, to monitor your learning and progress, tutors will assess your participation in classroom activities.

- Countries, nationalities, verb “Ser”
- Numbers, days of the week, and months of the year
- Interrogatives, personal information, verb “Tener”
- Conjugation of verbs
- Present tense
- Difference between Tú/ Usted
- Family, description of people, possessives adjectives
- Vocabulary of different objects
- How to buy in a shop
- How to describe a city (location, population...).
Meet the Tutor
Adriana Itriago
Adriana Itriago holds a qualification to teach adults (PTLLS, 2011). She has taught Spanish for seven years at different levels ranging from beginners to proficiency, including GCSE exams, in groups and one-to-one lessons. She has worked as a Spanish tutor in educational institutions such as City Lit, Bishopsgate Institute, Morley College, and UK Government departments including the Department of Environment and Food Rural Affairs. She also tutors students for well-known organisations including the BBC, Arthur & Gallagher, AHJ, and AON, amongst others. Adriana has a degree in Anthropology from the Central University of Venezuela.
