Based on a central principle of balance, the aim of these postures is to improve body alignment by correcting poor posture, increase flexibility, strengthen muscles and joints, improve breathing capacity and relieve mental and physical exhaustion.
This course is for those who have completed two to three terms of yoga at Bishopsgate Institute, or who have substantial previous experience, and wish to deepen their understanding of the practices. For Level 2 and beyond, you should be steady in standing poses and familiar with inversions.
You will need clothing that allows you to move freely, and bare feet. All yoga equipment is provided.
Good grounding in the Iyengar system with a minimum of one year’s experience or equivalent is required. Students should be able to maintain a stable shoulder-stand for at least 5 minutes. It is advisable to check with the teacher before progressing to these courses.
Frances Newberry is our longest-standing teacher, having taught at Bishopsgate Institute since 1984. She trained under Sylvia Prescott in the Iyengar System and graduated in the presence of Mr Iyengar himself. She is a certified teacher who holds the Iyengar Teachers Certification Mark, a sign of excellence, clarity and depth of understanding. She continues her personal development through regular courses held nationally.
