
How to Read Music Part 1
Centred around the piano, but focused on skills applicable to any discipline, the course includes rhythm games, practical demonstrations, writing simple melodies and chords as well as voluntary student participation.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone with an interest in learning how to read music whether for your own enjoyment or in order to progress through elementary music theory examinations. If you would like to learn to play a musical instrument or sing in a choir, this course is the perfect place to start.
You will learn
- A quick recognition of keys and tonality of Western music
- Understanding of time signatures, note values and rhythmic patterns
- How to read both treble and bass clefs
- Ability to sight-read a simple vocal line.
Meet the Tutor
Helen Astrid
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Helen sang as a soprano soloist at English National Opera, The Linbury Studio, Garsington Opera and Chelsea Opera Group, and The Phantom of the Opera, as well as many premieres of new work. In 2017, Helen produced the UK premiere of The Juniper Tree by Philip Glass. She gave her first Ted Talk, ‘Tell me the truth about Opera’ at Cass Business School. Helen’s book Singing Tips at your Fingertipswas described by The Guardian as ‘The place to find the singer within’.
