Are you just starting to write poetry? This course offers an opportunity to experiment with language and a variety of poetic devices though writing exercises, discussion of published poems, and sharing your own new work.
Who is this course for?
This is an introductory course and complete beginners are welcome. A good level of spoken and written English is needed.
Do I need any previous skills or knowledge?
A willingness to write and share your work is required.
Will I need any equipment or materials?
This course will be held via Zoom. You need a computer/laptop or mobile phone to access the Zoom website, and a reliable internet connection. For further information on how to join a Zoom meeting, you can watch the joining video here.
You will need a computer or other device to connect with Zoom and a notebook/paper and pen/pencil, or digital equivalent.
Will I be assessed?
There is no formal assessment for courses at Bishopsgate Institute. However, to monitor your learning and progress, tutors will assess your participation in classroom activities.
You will learn
By the end of this course, you will have learnt how to:
- Explore some of the key elements of a poem, such as imagery and concrete language
- Participate constructively in a workshop setting
- Read and write with an increased understanding of the key elements of a poem.
Meet the Tutor
Barbara Marsh is a London-based American writer, musician and teacher. Winner of the 2015 Troubadour International Poetry Prize, her collections, To the Boneyard and Mr Ferndean Takes Stock are published by Eyewear.
Her poetry has been widely anthologised and has appeared internationally in various literary magazines. As a musician/singer/songwriter, she was half of the Anglo-American duo The Dear Janes (Geffen Records).
She has an MPhil in Creative Writing from the University of Glamorgan and is currently working on a collection incorporating short fiction, poetry, and memoir.
