This course will take place in person.
Suitable for any make and model of smartphone, this is an introduction to the fundamental basics of photography without the need for expensive camera equipment. In this course, we also cover how to edit your photos using Snapseed, one of the best free apps available.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who would like to take better photos with their smartphone camera, whether you are an accomplished photographer or have an interest in photography. The course will also be helpful if you want to learn how to take better social media images for business or personal use.
What can I expect?
This is a practical session. We will be going outside, near Bishopsgate Institute, so we can put into practice what we are learning as we go along. We will return to a room in the Institute to edit at the end of the session. Please dress appropriately for the weather on the day. The route will be wheelchair accessible.
Will I need any equipment or materials?
You will need a fully charged smartphone. A portable charger is useful too, if you have one. Please download the free Snapseed app before the session.
Jet (the tutor) was fab, and other participants really nice. Jet was patient with us, and we were like excitable kids in a sweet shop when she told us some of the great things that the cameras on our smartphones are capable of!
A really enjoyable couple of hours. I have a better idea of how to take more interesting and better quality photos with my smartphone. It has improved my confidence in my ability to take a decent pic!
Very relaxed lively and funny tutor who knew a lot and was excited to share her skills. Very encouraging and packed a lot in.
How we’re keeping you safe
April 2022 update: Keeping you safe and healthy is our number one priority.
If you test positive for Covid-19 or are asked to isolate and are not able to attend your class or pre-booked event, please contact the Bishopsgate Box Office for further information (enquiries@bishopsgate.org.uk). Please do not come to the Institute in person if you have symptoms or have tested positive.
Wearing a face mask is no longer compulsory but we ask you to consider others when in our building and especially when spending time in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. You will see many of our staff and volunteers continuing to wear face masks and we are keeping the perspex screens at our reception desks.
Bishopsgate Institute has strict cleaning protocols in place and ventilation throughout the building. There are hand-sanitising stations available throughout the building and touch-free drinking fountains. Find out more about how we’re keeping you safe.
Bursary places
We provide a number of funded bursaries to people who find it hard to pay the full or concessionary rates. Find out more information on how to apply.

Jeanette Lendon
Jeanette Lendon, known as ‘Jet’, is the founder and Creative Director of Jet Black Squares. Combining her former teaching career in the East End of London with a more recent corporate photography business of 13 years, she has created a hub for everything creative surrounding the smartphone. Her passion is showing people of all ages how to get the best photos from their phone – she believes that photography should be available to everyone and not just those who have a ‘fancy camera’. Jet’s infectious enthusiasm is evident for all to see, whether teaching the CEO of an international company, presenting to a global conference of 100+ clients within the travel industry or an 85 year old grandma. She can often be seen whizzing around the streets of Hertfordshire on Basil, her gorgeous Vespa scooter.
