To mark 100 years since women first got the vote, this archives course introduces the longer history of the suffrage question. Topics covered include the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, the Chartist movement of the 1830s and 1840s, and the women’s suffrage campaigns from the 1860s.

Handbills, memoirs, pamphlets and ephemera (including Suffragette playing cards) from our special collections are used to introduce complex topics in an engaging and accessible way, as we revisit the hard-fought battle to gain better representation for ‘ordinary’ women and men.
