Working in collaboration with East End culture blog Spitalfields Life, we return to the glory days of Magic Lantern Shows that were such a popular feature of the Institute in its early years. Three photographers, Phil Maxwell, Mark Jackson and John Claridge, who have documented the East End over the years, individually share their favourite images and stories with our Library and Archives Manager, Stefan Dickers.

Phil Maxwell has photographed the East End ceaselessly since arriving in London from Liverpool in 1981. He has dedicated himself to documenting the lives of working people in the East End; a lifetime's project that thirty years later has led to an unparalleled archive of work, both in street photography and as a record of antifascist political movements in London.

This event will also celebrate the launch of Phil Maxwell’s Brick Lane publication (Spitalfields Life Books), a beautifully-produced book showing more than 300 dramatic black and white photographs of Brick Lane in the East End of London. The images appear in chronological sequence from 1982 to the present day and reveal a story of volatile social change on one of Britain’s most celebrated streets.

The C. A. Mathew exhibition at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery will be open for viewing before this event from 6.00pm – 7.00pm. Eleven Spitalfields Gallery: 11 Princelet Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6QH.
