Spitalfields Life Chit Chats
Traders at Spitalfields Market, 1991 (Jackson/Davies Photograph Collection, Bishopsgate Library)
The Tranny, the Bunny Girl and the Trendsetter - a chinwag with three gracious ladies.

Drawing comparisons with Pepys, Mayhew and Dickens, The Gentle Author of the popular blog Spitalfields Life has gained an extraordinary following in recent years, by writing hundreds of lively pen portraits of the infinite variety of people who live and work in the East End of London.

In this series of three Chit Chats (see 22 March and 12 April also), celebrating the publication of the book of over one hundred stories from Spitalfields Life, we introduce characters from these pages in conversation on the subjects of gender, commerce and time.

"We'd certainly select it for best blog, best interviews and best (relative) newcomer. Just in the past three days we've had a foam merchant, a man with 330-year-old wallpaper, and a selection of clowns at the annual Grimaldi service. Whatever next?"The Londonist

Organised in partnership with Newham Bookshop.
