The skyline of London brims with impressive monuments and buildings which pay testament to its historic place at the heart of global trade. But where did all this wealth come from, and how did London establish itself in this way? This session will explore the often-overlooked history of London’s central role in colonialism, a major factor in the growth of the city. By investigating London’s colonial institutions, as well as reading C19 Indian travel writers and more contemporary Caribbean novelists, we will find a hidden history of the city with resonances to this day.
