About this Archive
The Archive of notable British historian Raphael Samuel is one of the Bishopsgate Institute’s most prestigious collections. Deposited by his estate trustees in 1998 it provides a fascinating insight into his research methods and working practices.
The collection includes correspondence, working notes and research materials for all of Samuel’s major publications (including Theatres of Memory, East End Underworld, and The Lost World of British Communism), biographical material and teaching papers, and a large selection of cassettes of oral history interviews conducted by Samuel in the course of his work.
This online exhibition, curated by Stefan Dickers, presents highlights from the Raphael Samuel archive and was originally prepared for the book launch of Samuel's collected essays The Lost World of British Communism (Verso, 2006) held at the Institute in December 2006.
The exhibition is divided into the following areas:
- Childhood and Early Life
- Ruskin College and History Workshop
- East End Underworld
- Theatres of Memory
