Special talk on Lester Young in August...

There will be a special talk – as part of Bishopsgate Swing on 20th August - from Laura Knight about Lester Young to celebrate his birthday.   The talk will be in the Courtyard Room from 7.15pm.  Arrive early to make sure you get a spot as spaces are limited.  Laura Knight regularly speaks at Lindy Hop events about the history of this wonderful dance.

Lester Willis Young, also known as "Pres" or "Prez", was one of the most influential tenor sax players of his generation. His relaxed, sophisticated style can be heard on his countless recordings with King Oliver, Count Basie as Coleman Hawkins' replacement with Fletcher Henderson and later with Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday. He wasn’t just an incredible player, we was a brilliant personality. This talk will whizz you through his career, some of his recordings, the stories behind some of his most famous songs and give you a sense of the man behind the music.
