Debate: Poetry Review Speaks Out: 'Where now for Political Culture?'
Using poetry as our starting point, we will ask whether Culture can deliver a political message. How can literature explore themes and issues within politics without compromising artistic quality? Our panel bring their formidable poetic, editorial and critical expertise to bear on this thorniest of questions from the contemporary interface between culture and Culture.
Blake Morrison’s poetry collections include Dark Glasses (1984) and The Ballad of the Yorkshire Ripper (and Other Poems) (1987) and Pendle Witches (1996) illustrated by the artist Paula Rego. His non-fiction books include And When Did You Last See Your Father? (1993) made into a film in 2007, starring Colin Firth and As If (1997) about the trial of the two young boys convicted of killing the toddler James Bulger in Liverpool in 1993.
John Walsh has been a journalist for 30 years, and Literary Editor of the Evening Standard, Sunday Times and the Independent. He was Creative Director of the Cheltenham Festival of Literature in 1997 and 1998, and chair of judges of the Forward Prize in 2000. His books include The Falling Angels: an Irish Romance (1999), Are You Talking to Me: A Life Through the Movies (2003) and a novel, Sunday at the Cross Bones (2007).
Fiona Sampson has published numerous books, including On Listening (2007), and Common Prayer (2007), short-listed for the 2007 T.S. Eliot Prize. Her awards include the Newdigate Prize, and Forward Prize for single poem 2006 (short-list). She contributes regularly to The Guardian, The Irish Times and other publications, and is the editor of Poetry Review.
