Keep it Clean!: Lesbian and Gay Characters in British Soap Operas
John Partridge
We regret that this event has been cancelled.

An exciting afternoon exploring the ways in which gay, lesbian and trans characters have been represented in British television soap operas over the years. Speakers will discuss the public and media responses to these characters and their impact on culture and attitudes.

Speakers include:

John Partridge, the hugely popular actor, dancer and singer who is best-known for his role as Christian Clarke in EastEnders in which he played Jane Beale’s gay brother. John will talk about the difficulties involved in performing the role of a gay character, the positive outcomes, public responses and media representation.

Pete Lawson is a screenwriter and playwright, who is currently on the writing team for EastEnders and has also written for BBC One’s long running series Casualty. His other TV credits for BBC One include Being April in 2002, a series starring Pauline Quirke, and the television play Drive in 2004 which won a Royal Television Society award. Pete will talk about how he approaches writing gay characters, avoiding the clichés, audience and media responses, breaking taboos and pushing the boundaries.

Kathleen Beedles is an Executive Producer in Drama, writer and Story and Script Consultant, with an extensive and successful track record, working on over 2500 episodes of continuing drama to date.

During the three years Kathleen Series Produced Emmerdale, it had some of its highest profile storylines, which were recognised in 2006 by an RTS Award for Best Soap and by three consecutive BAFTA Nominations (2006-2009), and Soap Awards, Inside Soap Awards and TV Choice Awards. Kathleen also Produced Series 18 of Heartbeat, has Story Produced Eastenders, overseeing highlights such as the return of Sharon Watts and David Wicks, and has Story Consulted on Hollyoaks and River City.

Kathleen is now an Executive Producer and writer in Drama Development for Lime Pictures in London, specialising in returning series.

We regret that, as previously advertised, Daran Little will no longer be speaking at this event.
