East End in Focus: Bishopsgate Voices CD Launch
Photograph reproduced by kind permission of Monica Henderson, interviewed as part of Bishopsgate Voices in 2007
Are you interested in the daily lives and experiences of local people since the 1940s? Then join us in the library to celebrate the launch of the Bishopsgate Voices CD.

Bishopsgate Voices is the Institute’s oral history project, co-ordinated by staff and volunteers since 2007. Arranged thematically around topics such as ‘Making a Living’ and ‘At Play’, the project CD features more than eighty fascinating clips covering issues from the impact of housing policy on the area to working in the rag trade to market trading hours and pub licensing laws. Some of the ‘out-takes’ will be played at the launch, together with a slideshow of photographs and ephemera collected as part of Bishopsgate Voices. There will also be opportunities to share your memories of east London with others over a glass of wine at this relaxed and friendly community event.

Free admission
No advance booking required

Why not visit Eleven Spitalfields Gallery (by appointment only weekdays) from 7 March to 25 April 2014 to see the wonderful photographs of Spitalfields that C. A. Mathew took over 100 years ago. These rarely seen images from our archives, carefully restored by photographer Jeremy Freedman, have inspired and complement the East End in Focus series.
