Working in collaboration with East End culture blog Spitalfields Life, we return to the glory days of Magic Lantern Shows that were such a popular feature of the Institute in its early years. Three photographers, John Claridge, Mark Jackson and Phil Maxwell, who have documented the East End over the years, individually share their favourite images and stories with our Library and Archives Manager, Stefan Dickers.

John Claridge’s life-long passion for photography was born when, aged 8, he spotted a plastic camera at an East End funfair. Although having had no formal training as a photographer, in 1959 he began working for McCann Erickson Advertising in their Photography and Design department. In 1961 he became assistant to David Montgomery and in 1964 he opened his own studio in London. John has worked for many magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Nova, Popular Photography and Zoom.

The C. A. Mathew exhibition at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery will be open for viewing before this event from 6.00pm – 7.00pm. Eleven Spitalfields Gallery: 11 Princelet Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6QH.
