At this unique event, combining discussion, readings, sound excerpts and film, writer and local historian Rachel Lichtenstein (Rodinsky’s Room, On Brick Lane) reveals all about her latest oral history project with Sandys Row Synagogue in Spitalfields, the oldest Ashkenazi community in London. Drawing on interviews with elderly Jewish members of the synagogue, Rachel will discuss her work with photographer Phil Maxwell whose film created around the project, with Hazuan Hashim, will conclude the evening.

Rachel Lichtenstein is a cross-disciplinary artist and writer whose books include Rodinsky's Room (co-written with Iain Sinclair), On Brick Lane, which was shortlisted for the Ondaatje Prize and most recently Diamond Street: The Hidden World of Hatton Garden.

Phil Maxwell has photographed the East End ceaselessly since arriving in London from Liverpool in 1981. He has dedicated himself to documenting the lives of working people in the East End; a lifetime's project that thirty years later has led to an unparalleled archive of work, both in street photography and as a record of antifascist political movements in London.

Why not visit Eleven Spitalfields Gallery (by appointment only weekdays) from 7 March to 25 April 2014 to see the wonderful photographs of Spitalfields that C. A. Mathew took over 100 years ago. These rarely seen images from our archives, carefully restored by photographer Jeremy Freedman, have inspired and complement the East End in Focus series.
