Working in collaboration with East End culture blog Spitalfields Life, we return to the glory days of Magic Lantern Shows that were such a popular feature of the Institute in its early years. Three photographers, Mark Jackson, John Claridge and Phil Maxwell, who have documented the East End over the years, individually share their favourite images and stories with our Library and Archives Manager, Stefan Dickers.

A year before Spitalfields Market moved to Hackney Marshes in 1991, two young photographers, Mark Jackson and Huw Davies, undertook to photograph the workings of the all-night food emporium. The result is a unique and fascinating social documentary collection of more than 4,000 striking black and white images, which now have a home in Bishopsgate Library’s archives.

The collection also features thousands more pictures featuring London street-life, Blackpool's Golden Mile and the travelling fair season at Hull Fair and Nottingham Goose Fair.

The C. A. Mathew exhibition at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery will be open for viewing before this event from 6.00pm – 7.00pm. Eleven Spitalfields Gallery: 11 Princelet Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6QH.
