Sue Sanders and Schools OUT UK Archive Celebration
Sue Sanders, Emeritus Professor of Harvey Milk Institute, is founder of LGBT History Month and chairperson of Schools OUT UK. An active LGBT rights campaigner for over 40 years, Sue has challenged oppression in the public and voluntary sectors through a variety of roles, and continues to do so.

Schools OUT UK is an educational charity that began life as The Gay Teachers Association in 1974. As part of the vital work the charity undertakes, it provides a support network, campaigns on LGBT issues within education, researches curriculum development on LGBT issues, and works towards equality, safety and visibility in education for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people. It also provides free resources for use in schools via the website The Classroom.

Schools OUT UK has also led to the development of two initiatives that play a vital part in highlighting the importance of LGBTQ histories, and aim to promote equality and diversity and free resources for the benefit of the public.

In 2004, Schools OUT UK and Sue co-founded LGBT History Month with Paul Patrick which occurs every February.

In 2015, Schools OUT UK and Dr Jeff Evans founded OUTing the Past, an annual international LGBT history festival.

The archive of Sue Sanders and Schools OUT UK is now available for all to use as part of the LGBTQ+ Collections at Bishopsgate Institute, and we welcome you to join us in celebrating Sue’s and Schools OUT UK work, at this special launch event.

There will be an opportunity to view archive materials, as well as hear from Sue and others involved in Schools OUT UK and its projects.

Drinks will be available to purchase from the pop-up bar.
