Polari was a form of language spoken mainly by British gay men in the first half of the 20th century. Homosexuality was illegal in the UK, so Polari acted as a secret code, enabling gay men to communicate with one another.

In the first hour of this course you will listen to audio clips of people speaking Polari, learn about its origins, the people who spoke it, the reasons why Polari eventually died out and the chances of it returning.

The second hour comprises a language class where you will be taught basic skills in speaking Polari through a series of exercises.
