From Huguenot silk weavers to Jewish tailors to Bangladeshi sari suppliers to hipster street style, the East End has played an important part in London’s clothing industry for more than 300 years. This one-day course is an opportunity to discover the social history of fashion and shopping in the East End through expert talks delivered by fashion historian E-J Scott and practical exercises delivered by archives interpretation specialist Michelle Johansen. Students explore local enterprise using a range of fashion-related items from our special collections including Victorian advertising ephemera, Edwardian street photography and post-war pamphlets and journals. The day concludes with a short walking tour to trace local historic sites of fashion production and consumption.
