In 1912, Ireland was a united, integral component of the United Kingdom. Ten years later, there were two states on the island, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State. The former remained a part of the UK, the latter was largely independent. The wounds from the bitterly-fought divisions and disputes of the early twentieth century re-opened in 1968 with the onset of ‘The Troubles’, the most deadly conflict in post-war Western Europe. Combining expert tuition with opportunities to handle original source materials from our special collections, this new course provides an accessible introduction to the complex social and political history of twentieth-century Ireland.
This course is being delivered by Dr. David Convery in collaboration with Dr Michelle Johansen
