Wiss's Self-Acting Portable Water Closets Advertisement
The Victorians were well aware of the importance of hygiene in their society. Massive deaths caused by plagues had made them seriously rethink the issue, and a result of this was a greatly improved sewerage system.

Made to appeal very much to the Victorian gentry, these water closets now look like respectable pieces of furniture. They are a marked contrast from toilet design in the early days of the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods.
