London Collection Manuscripts Ephemera: Online Exhibition
As well as including over 45,000 books and pamphlets, Bishopsgate Library's London
Collection also includes a large number of manuscripts. These were collected by
the Institute's early librarian Charles Goss and subsequent generations of librarians
and now the collection contains around 250 items.
Along with the larger manuscript items, which can be viewed at the London Collection Manuscripts area, the collection also contains many items of ephemera. The term ephemera
is taken to mean printed material that is valid or useful for only a short time
such as tickets and posters.
This exhibition, curated and researched by Charles Inge, presents a selection
of interesting ephemera items from the London Collection, including advertisements, letters,
receipts, handbills, ballads and other varied material representing the eclectic
and often quirky nature of the collection. These items have now been fully catalogued
and are available to consult in the Library's reading room.
