To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, Claire Tomalin examines the life of one of Britain’s most famous authors. From the Artful Dodger to David Copperfield, Dickens created characters who live on in our imagination. As well as a great novelist he was also a political radical, journalist and traveller. In this talk Claire Tomalin will explore the rise of Dickens from unpromising beginnings to social and literary heights, capturing the complex character of this literary genius.
Claire Tomalin is an award-winning author and biographer. She has written extensively on novelists and writers with previous publications including Thomas Hardy: The Time-Torn Man, Jane Austen: A Life and The Invisible Woman:
The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens. Claire was previously literary editor of the Sunday Times and the New Statesman. Her latest biography of Charles Dickens was published in October 2011.
