The Porter's Toll
In 1990, two young photographers visited Spitalfields Market for the first time. Struck by the vitality and texture of the all night food emporium, Mark Jackson and Huw Davies resolved to document the workings of the market during the next 12 months, before the market moved to a new site.
The result is a collection of more than 4,000 black and white images, which is now on loan to the Bishopsgate Institute. The creator of Spitalfieldslife.com, The Gentle Author has described Davies and Jackson as poets with cameras.
This online exhibition features some of their work from that collection. A static exhibition of ten images from the collection will be on display at Bishopsgate Institute in March 2012. Click The Porter's Toll
