George Howell Archive Cataloguing Project
Following a generous award from the Pilgrim Trust/Esme Fairbairn Foundation Cataloguing
Grants Scheme in May 2006, the Bishopsgate Library undertook a project to catalogue
the George Howell archive to item level. The project has provided increased access
to this valuable resource for the study of the Victorian labour movement and radical
politics. This included the creation of detailed descriptions of Howell’s own
personal and professional correspondence, diaries and writings along with the
papers of the Reform League, the Plimsoll Seamen’s Fund, the Reform Demonstration
Committee and the Parliamentary Committee of the Trades Union Congress. The diaries
of Chartist and poet Ernest Jones and Howell’s research material regarding his
life and work have also been listed.
The project was completed in May 2007 and the full catalogue has now been made
available via the Library’s online public access catalogue and The National Archives’ Access to Archives website (www.a2a.org.uk) .
Victoria Goodwin and Imogene Mackay posted a series of updates on the progress
of the project.
